ONE-TO-ONE GRINDS

We offer one-to-one grinds to any students that wish to target their weakest areas.
Below, you will find both the booking calendar and answers to common questions about our grinds.

The price of each of our one-to-one grinds is €30.

The available timeslots are shown in the calendar below.

Good question!

Most websites that offer grinds typically default to going through exam questions, regardless of what issues the student is having.

We, instead make the structure of each grind unique to that student and their particular needs, as shown in the examples below.

Example #1
A student booked a grind because they didn't do as well as expected in a class test.

If possible, Mr. Kenny will ask that student to send him the class test in advance.

During the grind, for each question:

  • Mr. Kenny will ask if the student understands where they went wrong now that they are outside of a stressful exam setting.
  • If not, Mr. Kenny will drop hints here and there, always trying to ensure that it's the student that figures it out rather than him simply explaining it.
  • Mr. Kenny will then go through a similar example of two, asking the student to explain what he should do in the next step etc.
  • Mr. Kenny will then get the student to try similar questions themselves, checking in on their progress every so often.
  • The above is then repeated for each of the exam questions (time permitted).

Mr. Kenny will then give feedback at the end of the grind before choosing additional practice questions for the student to try after the grind in their own time.

Example #2
A student booked a grind because a particular topic simply isn't "clicking".

  • Mr. Kenny will spend the first few minutes of the grind trying to figure out exactly why that topic isn't clicking, whether it be the theory behind the maths, the maths itself etc.
  • Depending on the answer to this question, Mr. Kenny will then either explain the theory or go through some relevant questions, asking the student to explain what he should do in the next step etc.
  • Mr. Kenny will then get the student to try similar questions themselves, checking in on their progress every so often.

Mr. Kenny will then give feedback at the end of the grind before choosing additional practice questions for the student to try after the grind in their own time.

In summary, we do not have a set structure planned in advance of all of our grinds but instead choose what we believe is the most effective structure for that particular student based on their particular issue.

Typically 50 minutes, but we're not very strict on that.

If Mr. Kenny feels that a few extra minutes will greatly help a student with their understanding, he will gladly keep going!

Sure!

Yes!

However, note the following statement from the official project brief:

"While you can seek advice from your teacher and others in guiding you, you must carry out your work independently of other candidates and the project and the report must be your own individual work..."

Mr. Kenny will be strictly following this statement during the grind.

Therefore, you should expect any questions that you have about the project to be answered indirectly rather than directly, often with a question thrown back at you!

"I don't know how to calculate this value. What should I do?"

"Well, what have you tried so far?"

"I looked for it on Wikipedia but couldn't find it."

"Is there anything else that you cold try?"

"I could look on other websites?"

"Is there a more 'sciencey' approach?"

"I suppose I could do an experiment?"

"That's more like it! What type of experiment?"

...

Note that one thing Mr. Kenny cannot do at all is read through your project to tell you if it is good or not.

Only if a student wants them to be, and only with their parent's/guardian's permission!

A student's privacy is important to us and, in accordance with EU privacy laws, we therefore only record a grind 1) if a student wants us to and 2) if a parent/guardian allows us to.

In the booking form, we therefore specifically ask whether a student would like the grind to be recorded or not.

If the answer is yes then, during the grind, we will send the student a link to a personalised webpage on A.M. Online that will include this recording. For the sake of privacy, this webpage will be password protected.

And don't worry, it will be possible to stream the recording until at least the student's final exam!

Once a timeslot is chosen on the calendar, you will be automatically redirected to the booking page which needs to be completed to reserve that timeslot.

On that page, you will be required to provide the following information:

  • an email address that information about the grind can be sent to
  • the specific topic that the student would like us to focus on during the grind
  • if the student would like us to record the grind or not so that they can view the grind again whenever they wish
  • any additional information that the student believes might be useful, e.g. a specific subtopic they are having difficulty with
  • payment details for the grind

Our grinds take place on Google Meet.

If you are accessing the grind on a computer, there is nothing to do as the link that we provide to join the grind will open in a browser.

If you are instead accessing the grind via a tablet or smartphone, we recommend installing the Google Meet app for that device [Android] [iOS].

We recommend using a computer, a laptop or a large tablet if possible!

All you'll need is a pen, paper and calculator!

We totally understand that a student may, for example, have had a tough school day on the day of the grind and would prefer to simply take it easy for the rest of the day.

We therefore allow a grind to be rescheduled to any available timeslot as long as that request is made less than 3 hours before the start of the grind.

Likewise, a student may no longer feel that the grind is necessary because the topic has "clicked" since the grind was booked. We wouldn't want that student to be wasting both their time or money on a grind if it's no longer needed!

We therefore again allow a grind to be cancelled for a full refund as long as that request is made less than 3 hours before the start of the grind.

If you wish to cancel the grind, let us know on Teacher Chat or at teacher@amonline.ie.

No problem!
