Students/Parents

In a maths lesson, it is quite common, and understandable, for a student to think, “wait, why do I have to learn this?! I’m never going to use it!”

As its name suggests, the subject of Applied Maths exists to answer that sensible question. Rather than discussing seemingly random mathematical concepts, we apply such concepts to real-life situations in this subject, thereby making Applied Maths far more interesting and enjoyable!

In addition to Applied Maths being a fascinating subject to learn about, there are many other reasons as to why we highly recommend students take this subject, some of which are discussed below.

1) Points!

Applied Maths consistently has one of the highest average grades of any Leaving Cert subject.

There are many reasons for this, one being that there is a large overlap between Applied Maths and Leaving Cert Maths. As such, Applied Maths is not so much about learning new concepts but instead about applying already known concepts to tackle real-life problems.

Due to this overlap, Applied Maths students also obtain a deeper understanding of Leaving Cert Maths, thereby also increasing their likelihood of getting those bonus points in their Maths exam!

2) Future career prospects

The methods used to tackle the real-life problems found in Applied Maths have applications in a large, diverse field of disciplines, including:

  • physics
  • chemistry
  • biology
  • maths
  • engineering
  • medicine
  • computer science
  • environmental science
  • economics
  • robotics
  • finance
  • animation
  • architecture
  • image/video production

  • computer science
  • environmental science
  • economics
  • robotics
  • finance
  • animation
  • architecture
  • image/video production

and more. Applied Maths therefore gives any student who wishes to enter one of these fields a head start on their career!

As an example, many of the animations that you will find on this website could not have been created without an understanding of one of the topics in this subject!

3) Stress-free learning

A.M. Online allows students to learn Applied Maths at their own pace and without any unnecessary distractions.

Students also do not have to be concerned about whether they missed something important if they were not in school on a particular day nor do they have to worry about getting homework done that night if they had already made other plans.

Instead, students can log in and continue their learning at a time that suits them.

Unlike many subjects, this flexibility therefore makes learning Applied Maths a joy rather than a chore!

Not that we know of! We're quite confident that we're the only website that offers all of the features that are described on our homepage.

There's actually an interesting, somewhat counter-intuitive, reason for that - the more effort that is put into a website like this, the less profitable it becomes!

For example, let's assume that we instead only offered grinds. In that case, creating this website would have been relatively trivial and could have been completed in a week or two. In addition, each student that would use our website would likely purchase dozens of grinds with us each year.

In contrast, creating our interactive lessons took years of hard work. Yet, in creating those lessons, we have greatly reduced the average student's need for grinds and thereby greatly reduced how much we receive from each student.

Overall, spending all of that time and effort creating our lessons has reduced the number of grinds each student books with us by at least ten-fold, effectively reducing our potential revenue by at least ten-fold, if not more!

This is the main reason as to why you are unlikely to find such high-quality lessons on other websites - creating such content would self-cripple their main revenue stream!

So, why did we do something crazy like that? Well, we're not a business! We have no interest in revenue or profit and instead only care about giving students the best support at the cheapest price that we can manage.

In fact, with each year, we hope to use the data about what topics our members are booking grinds in to target the lessons that need improving, thereby further reducing the number of grinds that we receive and thereby reducing our revenue year on year!

Yes! The content of A.M. Online was designed specifically for the new syllabus.

The primary reasons that we believe A.M. Online gives students the best outlook on their Applied Maths exam are outlined on the homepage.

Rather than boring you by repeating them here, we instead recommend reading the homepage in full if you haven't already done so by clicking here!

Easy! The free lessons can be directly accessed by clicking here - no registration required!

No, and for a good reason!

Such courses typically consist of the following:

  • A teacher talks through some exam questions. We already include solutions and walkthroughs for our exam papers.
  • Students then answer similar exam-style questions. We already provide students with plenty of exam questions to practice with, as well as the solutions to those questions.
  • Students are often also provided with teacher notes at the end. These notes are typically significantly less detailed than the lesson content on this website.

The content found in such courses are therefore already included with a membership!

We also have additional features that are of great benefit during revision. Teacher Chat, for example, allows you to talk to a teacher about the exam whenever you like!

We could, of course, not have our revision section included with a membership but instead separate that section into multiple "revision courses" that require additional fees to access.

However, we don't do that here. We only care about giving students everything they need as cheaply as we can manage.

Sure!

However, we don't make statements like "our students get 20% more points than the average student" for a very important reason - such statements are incredibly misleading!

Students who sign up to websites such as A.M. Online are putting in the effort to improve their knowledge. Such students are actively looking for ways to do better in their exams. Such students are therefore of course going to do better than the average student, regardless of the quality of the website.

Instead, we merely state that we received nothing but praise from both students and teachers alike in our pre-launch trials, and that is the most honest statement that can be made!

By signing up right here!

Until the end of the school year (30th June).

And don't worry, we'll send all 5th years details on how they can renew their membership for 6th year shortly before their membership is due to expire.

Definitely!

In any subject, many students require additional support outside of their school in order to increase their likelihood of doing well on the exam.

A.M. Online provides students with and without an Applied Maths with that support, thereby giving them that extra edge.

For example, we offer you another teacher you can ask questions to, one that you can contact throughout the day if you need help with the subject.

In addition, we offer you detailed Walkthrough solutions to every practice question that we provide so that you don't have to worry if you didn't understand something that your teacher explained to you.

We also offer you all of the revision material that you'll need to ace the exam.

And more!

Good question! It's completely understandable to be unsure of what level to take!

Unless you have been advised otherwise, we recommend that all students should initially assume that they are doing Higher Level.

As you progress through the lesson content, you will then get a sense of which level is the more suitable for you.

If you are still unsure which level to do at the beginning of 6th year, we suggest that you contact Mr. Kenny on Teacher Chat and he will offer you further guidance!

No catch!

We created this website with the primary goal of giving students everything they need to ace the exam as cheaply as possible.

Membership is therefore priced at what we believe is the lowest amount that keeps the website running!

Not at all!

Don’t worry, many students don’t even know that this subject even exists when 5th year starts!

We provide a customised timetable to all of our students that allows for plenty of revision time at the end of 6th year, regardless of when they start.

Of course, the earlier you start, the less time you will have to spend on this website per week.

The sooner, the better!

Sure! We have a separate bundle of FAQs entirely devoted to these grinds right here!

That’s entirely up to you!

We provide you with a timetable that has flexibility of when you wish to use this website.

Some students use this website one evening per week, others like to do little bits here and there throughout the week, and so on.

Whichever is your preferred style!

Not at all!

We make no assumptions about your current maths knowledge and explain from scratch any maths that is required.

A.M. Online has been optimised to work across all of the usual devices – computers, tablets and smartphones!

You will not use any additional stationery that you don't already need for Leaving Cert Maths.

Primarily, you will use the following:

  • pens (preferably multiple colours)
  • ruler
  • copybook (This can be a normal copybook, a maths copybook, an A4 pad or indeed whatever you prefer!)

You will also need the following:

  • scientific calculator - Don't worry if you don't have one right now as you won't need one for the first few lessons. A scientific calculator is also required for Leaving Cert Maths and therefore you will be required to get one eventually!
  • Formulae and Tables booklet - you can download a free copy here! - When sitting any Leaving Cert exam that involves maths, including Applied Maths, this booklet is provided to you so that you don't have to spend time memorising everything. As such, it's a good idea to refer to this booklet as you go through the lessons so that you may get accustomed to knowing where each formula is, thereby saving you the time looking for the right page on the exam!

Yes! There are many free tools available that allow you to do just that.

Our personal recommendation is hypothes.is, a free browser extension that can be set up in less than minute by following the steps here.

If you encounter any issues with this extension, feel free to contact Mr. Kenny on Teacher Chat and he will be happy to help!

No, because exam predictions aren't a thing!

"What?! But this type of question hasn't appeared in the last six years! Surely it will appear this year?"

Perhaps, but I'm sure last year's students thought the same thing when it didn't appear in the last five years.

Yes, with every year, it is more likely that that question will appear. That, however, is not a "prediction", it is just using logic. I did not use "teacher intuition" to make that statement. I have not told you anything that you did not already know.

"But what about this type of question that appears every second year? Surely it's safe bet that it will appear this year since it didn't appear last year?"

Again, using logic, that's likely but not guaranteed. And that's the only honest answer anyone can give you.

"But this website said they predict the correct questions 85% of the time!"

Yes, and that figure is nothing special. If you do nothing more than assume that the most likely questions will appear, you can be right as often as that.

Any website that suggests that they are good at making predictions are being deceptive in order to appear like they have some secret formula that no one knows about. No one is good at making predictions because exam predictions are not a thing.

Here's how Mr. Kenny went about writing each of the sample papers for this website:

1) First, he created any "interesting" questions that he could think of. This could be questions about current affairs or simply questions that he believed would make students pause and think.

2) The remaining questions were then chosen such that the overall difficulty of that sample paper was the same as the others.

This is a very common exam writing technique that is used by many teachers and examiners.

In terms of the Leaving Cert, the only significance of past papers in those two steps is therefore that the overall difficulty of the paper remains the same. After step 1 is complete, this is achieved in step 2 both by including some questions that students expect to see and also by including some unexpected questions that are not too difficult.

As you can see, unexpected questions can appear in both steps 1 and 2 and there is therefore no way of predicting how many there will be!

As such, if you feel that you are particularly weak in a certain topic, we don't recommend ignoring that topic just because you don't believe that it will come up.

Instead, we encourage you to keep practising with our exercise questions and sample papers, seek help from Mr. Kenny on Teacher Chat and to book a grind when necessary!

Unfortunately not!

The use of a single account by multiple students is against our terms and conditions and such activity will result in the immediate termination of that account without the possibility of a refund.

Membership has been priced at what we believe is the lowest amount that will keep the website running. This amount was calculated based on what we have estimated to be the number of students that will sign up for membership each year.

If more than one student uses the same account, then the number of students we estimated will turn out to be too low. This, in turn, would mean that we would have to increase the price of membership, which would not be fair to other students!

We will inform you of the details of the project as soon as they are announced at the beginning of 6th year. We will also provide details on how you should proceed from there.

All the usual - debit cards, credit cards and PayPal!

Don't worry, we have you covered!

Simply contact Mr. Kenny on Teacher Chat and he will offer you further guidance on that content!

Looking to get a head start eh? We like your style!

You are of course more than welcome to become a member!

Yes!

If you're a parent, tutor or simply someone who is interested in learning about the subject, you are free to sign up for a student membership.

No, and for a good reason!

While it would be relatively trivial to place the contents of this website into a book, it would also mean removing many of the unique features found on this website, including Teacher Chat, animations etc.

A.M. Online was created to give students the best resources possible for this subject. Removing beneficial features would do nothing except demonstrate that we have not achieved that goal!

We've actually spent so long optimising our website for mobile devices that there isn't a need for one!

We could create what's known as a "skeleton app", which is simply the mobile form of the website thrown into an app.

However, as such an app wouldn't add anything extra, we're sticking with the mobile website!

Each of our websites is expected to have a significant difference in terms of the number of students that sign up each year.

As we are not interested in profit, we have therefore priced each school licence as low as we can based on those estimated numbers.

A.M. Online is for an optional subject over the two year Leaving Cert.

L.C. Maths is for a core subject over the two year Leaving Cert. We therefore expect this website to have more members than A.M. Online.

Junior Maths is for a core subject over the three year Junior Cycle. We therefore expect this website to have even more members than L.C. Maths.

Teachers/Principals

A school licence grants each of the agreed upon number of students (typically all 5th/6th year Applied Maths students) a full membership to A.M. Online, thereby allowing them to access all of our resources and to use all of our features until the end of school term (30th June).

Likewise, it also entitles any Applied Maths teacher at that school to a teacher account. This account includes added benefits as outlined on our homepage, including the ability to easily show and hide the solutions of our exercise questions.

Both!

For many schools, hiring an Applied Maths teacher is not a financially viable option due to low student interest.

As such, A.M. Online is a great alternative for students in such schools whose only other options are 1) to learn at home using a schoolbook with little help or guidance and/or 2) to spend a significant amount of money on additional support, which is often not possible.

For schools with an Applied Maths teacher, A.M. Online offers everything that can be found in a schoolbook, and much more! This website therefore makes for a much better classroom learning experience than the static pages of a schoolbook.

Even if our website is not used specifically in the classroom, it's still incredibly beneficial as a secondary resource for Applied Maths teachers and their students by, for example, giving students another teacher they can ask questions to, even when they are at home!

Good idea! You should certainly have a look around the website first to ensure that it is as incredible as we imply!

You can request a temporary account for that very purpose by emailing us at teacher@amonline.ie using your school email address.

On our Leaving Cert Maths website, L.C. Maths, we answer this question honestly by stating that it is dependent on classroom sizes, behavioural issues and IT availability.

On A.M. Online, however, we instead strongly recommend that each school uses this website as a schoolbook replacement.

The majority of Applied Maths classes consist of a relatively small number of well-behaved students. In addition, Applied Maths is often taught of outside of usual school hours, thereby making it very likely that a school's computer room, or indeed a school's collection of tablets, laptops etc., are available.

The feedback that we received for our website in our pre-launch trials have been incredibly positive from both students and teachers alike. A.M. Online has been described by one teacher as a "schoolbook on steroids" and by another as a "smart eBook", and we feel that those descriptions are justified.

Therefore, as teachers are in agreement that this website offers many more benefits to both themselves and to their students compared to a standard schoolbook, we feel that there is little reason for teachers not to use it as their primary teaching resource.

Yes! The content of A.M. Online was designed specifically for the new syllabus.

Yes! There are no restrictions on when you can obtain a school licence.

Of course, the earlier, the better!

No catch!

We created this website with the primary goal of giving both students and teachers access to the best resources for Applied Maths as cheaply as possible.

Until the end of the school year (30th June).

We will send each school details on how they can renew their licence for the following year a few weeks before this date.

That is entirely dependent on the school!

Some schools fund it themselves, some schools fund it through parents, and others a bit of both.

The choice is up to you!

School licenses are typically paid for by bank transfer but we also accept debit cards, credit cards and PayPal!

Easy!

When applying for a licence, be sure to use your school email address. We'll then verify things from there!

Certainly, and it's greatly encouraged!

If your school has a licence, you can request a free teacher account by emailing us at teacher@amonline.ie using your school email address.

Each school licence, by definition, entitles the agreed upon number of teachers and students in that school full access to this website.

The use of a single school licence across multiple schools is against our terms and conditions. A licence that is used in multiple schools, without permission, will be revoked without the possibility of a refund.

We enforce this condition as we price our student licence as low as possible while still being able to keep the website running. Any loss of potential revenue therefore makes it likely that the price of a school licence would have to increase.

Yes! There are many free tools available that allow students to do just that.

Our personal recommendation is hypothes.is, a free browser extension that each student can set up in less than minute by following the steps here.

If any student encounters any issues with this extension, they are free to contact Mr. Kenny on Teacher Chat and he will be happy to help!
